Since the introduction of camera into phones, photography
has already become one of the highlights of a smartphones and almost all of the
popular smartphone makers are making photography specific mobile phones and
giving it the best hardware possible including multiple lenses, optical image
stabilization, loads of megapixels, low light performance etc. Application
developers aren’t behind. They are trying to make use of this hardware to their
maximum by providing a lot of features and giving the user a great photography
experience. One of the most popular photography application these days is
Afterlight, with its latest version Afterlight 2.0 becoming a top app on the Android playstore.
Afterlight’s camera interface takes the influence from the
iPhone’s inherent camera application. Top of the screen has the toggle for
flash (on/auto/off), grid view, front or back camera. Bottom of the interface
has the cancel button which would take you back to the menu, the shutter button
and the timer (3, 7 or 10 sec). Touching the screen would focus the camera to
that specific spot. Also you can set the exposure ring for setting up exposure.
The simplicity makes this application a great thing. It has
a very simple and intuitive interface and a range of tools which makes the
editing of pictures precise in a small amount of time. Once you select a photo
to edit, it’ll open the photo in full screen for you to make sure that you have
selected the exact picture you want to edit. After confirmation, you can edit
your picture via a range of tools provided by AfterLight.
The tools available are clarify, brightness, contrast,
saturation, exposure, highlights, shadows, fade, highlight tone, mid tone,
shadow tone, temperature, vignette, grain and sharpening(blur as well). Each of
these tools if provided with a slider to apply the change to image in real
time. apart from that, there are fine adjustment for each of these tools. One
of the unique tools in this application is the clarify tool. This would give
your photo a depth, contrast and sharpness all at once without overdoing it.
Other that these tools, the AfterLight application comes
with 27 original and 30 guest filters. Most of the photography apps will have a
normal sepia and a couple of other filters, though AfterLight has these filters
in a more professional manner. You can also set the strength of these filters
using a slider and the changes will be shown in real-time. These filters are
good for a quick edit even before you are taking a photograph. The cropping
tool will rotate the photograph to any angle possible. Apart from all these
photography specific tools we also have some bling tools like addition of
textures and frames. There are currently about 44 textures and 70 frames
available to give your photograph that extra oomph factor.
